8. Holding Together

Structure of the sign

Water upon the earth flows together wherever it can, as for example in the sea, where all rivers gather. This is a symbol pointing to holding together and to its laws. The same idea is suggested by the fact that all lines are yielding, except for the firm line in the fifth place, the station of the ruler. The yielding hold together by being influenced by the firm will in the guiding position, which forms their center of union. Yet this strong, guiding personality likewise holds together with the others, through whom he finds a complement to his own being.

The Judgment

Holding together brings good fortune. Inquire of the oracle once more whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; then there is no blame. Those who are uncertain gradually draw near. Whoever comes too late meets with misfortune. It is a matter of joining with others in order to complement and foster one another through mutual union. For such holding together, there must be a center around which the others rally. To become the center for the holding together of men is a difficult task of great responsibility. It demands inner greatness, consistency, and strength. Therefore, let whoever wishes to unite others about him examine himself to see whether he is equal to the task; for he who seeks to gather others without the seal of one who is called creates more confusion than if no union had taken place. But where a true rallying point exists, those who are uncertain and initially hesitant gradually draw near of their own accord. Those who arrive too late suffer the loss themselves. For in holding together, the right time is also essential. Ties are formed and consolidated according to definite inner laws. Shared experiences cement them, and whoever comes too late and can no longer participate in these fundamental common experiences must suffer when, as a straggler, he finds the door shut. Yet he who has recognized the necessity of union, but does not feel within himself the power to act as a center of union, has the duty to ally himself with another organic community.

The Image

Upon the earth is water: the image of Holding Together. Thus the kings of antiquity granted the various states as fiefs and cultivated friendly relations with the feudal lords. Water upon the earth fills every hollow and clings firmly to it. The social organization of antiquity was founded upon this principle of holding together between dependents and ruler. Water flows together of its own accord, because in all its parts it is subject to the same laws. In like manner, human society must hold together through a community of interests that causes each individual to feel himself a member of a whole. The central power of a social organism must see to it that every member finds its true interest in holding together, as was the case in the paternal relationship between the sovereign and the feudatories in ancient China.

The lines

Line 1

Hold to him in truth and loyalty: this is without blame. Sincerity like a full earthen bowl: thus in the end good fortune comes from without. When it is a question of forming ties, complete sincerity is the only sound foundation. This disposition, represented under the image of a filled earthen vessel in which all is substance and nothing empty form, expresses itself not in clever words, but through inner power; and this power is so strong that it draws good fortune to itself from without with great effect.

Line 2

Hold to him within. Perseverance brings good fortune. If one responds in a right and steadfast manner to the requests summoning one from above to activity, the ties to the other remain primarily inward; one does not lose oneself. But he who seeks union in a pushing and clinging manner does not follow the path of the superior man who preserves his dignity, but rather throws himself away.

Line 3

You hold together with people who are not the right ones. One often finds oneself among people who do not belong to one's own sphere. There one must not allow oneself to be swept into false intimacy through the force of habit. That this would lead to evil requires no words. Sociability without intimacy is the only right course toward such people; only in this way does one remain free for subsequent ties with one's peers.

Line 4

Hold to him outwardly as well. Perseverance brings good fortune. The relationship with a man who is the center of holding together is here already firmly established. There one may and should openly show one's devotion. One must only remain steadfast and not allow oneself to be led astray by anything.

Line 5▶ ruling line

Manifestation of holding together. In the hunt the king allows beaters on three sides only, and foregoes the game that breaks off in front. The citizens need no warning. Good fortune! In the royal battues of ancient China, it was customary for game to be driven from three sides. On the fourth side, the driven game could break away. Insofar as the animals did not turn aside here, they had to pass into a gate behind which the king stood ready for the chase. Only the animals that penetrated here were shot. Those that broke away in front were allowed to run. This custom corresponded to the royal mind, which wished not to make a slaughter of the hunt, but brought down only such quarry as had, so to speak, surrendered of its own accord. Here is shown a ruler or influential man to whom people are drawn. Whoever comes to him he receives, whoever does not come he allows to go. He entreats no one, flatters no one: they all come of their own accord. In this way a free dependence is formed among those who hold to him. The people do not need to constrain themselves by force, but can display their dispositions without fear. No police measures are required; they are devoted to their lord of their own accord. This freedom applies to life in general as well. One should not court the favor of men. If one cultivates within oneself the purity and power necessary for a center of union, those who are destined for one come of their own accord.

Line 6

He finds no head for holding together. Misfortune. The head is the beginning. Without a right beginning, there is no right end. If one has missed the connection and now constantly hesitates, shrinking from full, genuine devotion, one will regret one's error when it is too late.
